Today we celebrated Halloween and helped our community by visiting those who live at the Bostonian Nursing Home. The students were being the light of Christ by saying happy Halloween, God bless you, and have a great day. It truly brought smiles to their faces. Later in the day, we read Stellaluna together and talked about bats! First we talked about what we already know about bats and then what we learned about bats from the book. This connects to our next science unit - all about animals and their environments!
We have worked very hard over the last few weeks to understand where we are in the world. We talked about our street, neighborhood, city, state, country, continent, and planet. We made these books about our location and took turns reading them and sharing them with the class. We also wrote informational paragraphs about our location using these books! The students did an excellent job and were very excited about their finished products. This week was a review week in our reading curriculum. We reviewed everything we have learned since the beginning of the year. The students are doing an awesome job! One thing we spent some time reviewing was inflected word endings. We reviewed these rules as helpful reminders about what we need to do when we add -ed or -ing to a word. The students have been very engaged and excited about our writer's workshop time! We have been practicing writing "small seed stories" or personal narratives that zoom in on one moment. We are working on adding lots of details to our stories! Last week in Reading, we read a non-fiction piece called "A Walk in the Desert" about all of the plants and animals you can find in the desert. Before reading the story, we talked about our background knowledge and asked questions about what we wanted to learn more about. After reading the story, we talked about what we learned from the story. We will practice reading more non-fiction stories throughout the year, as they are important for second graders to practice! After reading the book One by Kathryn Otoshi, we discussed the importance of treating each other kindly and making sure everyone feels included. The students decorated their class number to show how everybody counts in 2A, which was the main message of the book! We will be using this board as our math word wall. Right now we are in Topic 2 Addition Strategies. These are all vocabulary words that we will learn about throughout this topic in math! |
