We started our poetry journals this week! We read a poem together and talked about what it means. This week we read The Voice by Shel Silverstein. Then we found words that rhyme in the poem and talked about whether it had rhythm or repetition. Then the students wrote about how the poem made them feel or what it made them think of.

We have spent the last two weeks learning about addition and subtraction in part-part-while mats for Topic 1 of our math curriculum. We learned how addition and subtraction are related and worked on writing fact families (i.e. 4+3=7, 3+4=7, 7-3=4, and 7-4=3), where the number sentences are different but use the same numbers. We took our Topic 1 Math Assessment today! Thank you to those who were able to make it to our back-to-school night! It was a wonderful night for our families to see our classroom. For those who were not able to make, please let me know if there is another time you would like to stop by our room! 2A looked at different ways to represent numbers by looking at the number of letters in their name and their age. They showed these numbers in dice, tally marks, words, and on a number line in Math About Me! This is hanging on the bulletin board outside of our classroom. 2A wrote about our hopes for the year in second grade - many wrote about learning about certain things, reading chapter books, and making new friends. These will be displayed in our classroom all year as we work toward our goals. Today 2A talked about the power of prayer in remembering September 11th. We read the book "September 12th: We knew everything would be alright" which is a beautiful book written by first graders. The book explains how even though something sad happened, the sun still rose up, school was the same, and their parents still said they loved them when they tucked them in at night, and that's how they knew everything would be alright. We then wrote prayers asking for God to help those in need and for people in our lives who needed our prayers. |
